Age brings with it a certain amount of respect, which is entirely acceptable and to be expected. However, at some point, it almost becomes a scenario where one is taking advantage of other people’s eagerness to submit. Such is the instance when a mother-in-law calls a birthday lunch or Sunday dinner and expects her daughter-in-law and the members of her family to immediately cancel whatever plans they may have and attend.

It definitely wouldn’t be a problem if the mother-in-law had made these plans earlier and informed her daughter-in-law much sooner. But it all comes back to the rudeness that is typical of mothers-in-law, the kind that makes women want to call their mothers immediately rather than tolerate their mothers-in-law.
