#4 Disregards Confidentiality and Safety Protocols

Unless one of the confidentiality exceptions applies or you explicitly consent to the dissemination of information to other parties, most of the time, what you say in a meeting must remain in the meeting.

A therapist is legally permitted to provide information if:

• You might endanger the lives of both yourself and other people;
• The therapist is worried that a child, an elderly person, or a person with a disability is being abused;
• A subpoena is issued as per a court order;
• You are a minor, and parents have the right to know how this kind of information.

A therapist’s legal and ethical obligation to keep the therapy process private is violated if they do not have your signed or verbally verified informed consent.
