7 Lies That Ruin Trust Forever in a Marriage

Lies, Marriage

Are These 7 Lies Slowly Destroying Your Marriage?

When we are in a long-term relationship, we tend to believe that a small lie wouldn’t change how we see our partner, and vice versa. Well, that’s completely false. Even a casual ”I’m fine” that hides overwhelming feelings can contribute to a loss of trust. Usually, before we even understand, all the little things left unspoken in a marriage can quickly add up.

Marriages are long-term relationships built on trust and respect. So, for things to work out, we need to be honest about how we feel, what we need, where we’ve been, and what we want. Unfortunately, when some of these basic truths are replaced with lies, everything that has been built over the years can be destroyed.

Being lied to by your partner can not only affect you in the short term but also make it difficult for you to heal in the long term. Every lie, no matter how little it seems, has the potential to cause serious harm to the connection that exists between couples.

As you might have already guessed, some of the most hurtful lies in a marriage are related to betrayal of trust and intimacy. Emotional and physical infidelity are very common nowadays, so let’s begin by addressing them.

Top 7 Worst Lies in a Relationship

1. Infidelity

This is probably one of the worst things anyone can lie about. Cheating on your partner is one of the most disrespectful things you can do, and it destroys everything in the blink of an eye.

What we tend to overlook is that cheating is not always physical. We don’t need to wait until our partners move forward with someone else. So, first things first, no matter how hurtful it may be, you need to speak to your partner about how you feel. Share your thoughts and ideas, and be completely honest.

Communication works best every time. If you are the one who made a mistake, make sure to speak to your partner first. Share all the details and things that led you to that disrespectful action. This way, you’ll ensure that your partner will get through the phase more easily.

Not telling your partner what led you to make a mistake can seriously affect their well-being. Their mental health and self-trust can be seriously damaged. It’s very hard to recover from betrayal, so pay attention to your actions and avoid breaking someone’s heart just for an adventure.

2. Finances

In marriage, there shouldn’t be any secrets about finances. Not sharing your financial situation with your partner can easily lead to instability. Just think about it for a second. What would you do if your partner didn’t want to share any information about his/her financial status with you? You’ll most likely feel untrusted and disappointed, especially if you’re completely open about your situation.

So, make sure to always avoid any kind of lie when it comes to finances. You should discuss any problem together. Having secrets will only cause trouble and destroy the trust and connection you’ve built over the years.

Share your financial situation and be transparent about any decision that involves money. This way, you’ll get rid of the possibility of arguing because of your incomes and savings. As in many other marriage problems, communication is key.

3. Details

Do you know that type of partners who use to falsify details? Well, keep in mind that avoiding the truth can only lead to negative consequences, especially when you’re hiding it from your life partner.

When someone is hiding important information from their past, such as their previous relationships or work history, there’s clearly a problem. The idea of not sharing your past can immediately affect how the other person perceives you. Once someone hears you lying about past situations, it’s clear that you are most likely to do it again.

Just imagine entering a relationship and not knowing anything about your partner’s previous lifestyle. Could you simply move forward and ignore the past? We have to admit that even though we like it or not, the past is a very important part of our lives. It defines our present and influences our future. So, make sure to be as open as possible when it comes to your previous life. Being secretive about it could seriously affect your marriage.

4. False evidence of success

Unfortunately, there are many people who try to make their past lives seem wonderful and exaggerate their achievements. All they want to do is impress the people around, but most importantly, their partner. Constantly seeking validation makes it difficult to develop genuine and meaningful connections.

Why would someone be together with a liar or a person who always pretends? People are seeking genuine emotions, such as love and respect. Nowadays, when technology has taken over, real connections and bonds are slowly disappearing.

Be the change you want to see, and each time you talk about yourself and your achievements, keep things as transparent as possible.

5. Previous traumas

Have you been through a rough time? Then, don’t hesitate and share your experience with your partner. Hiding such things in a marriage is not acceptable. Your life partner should be your best friend and the person you trust the most. If you can’t open up about your past and previous traumas, it might mean that you’re not in a relationship with the true person.

Let your partner know about what you feel, because that’s the only way they will understand how to help you. Hiding something as serious as a trauma is no joke. Your memories could activate any time anxiety episodes and even panic attacks, so telling your partner about what you’ve been going through could make the process easier.

6. Intentions

Another type of lie that can seriously affect a marriage is when a person tells falsehoods about their long-term objectives. All future aspirations should be discussed at the beginning of a relationship. Ask your partner whether they want children or not, and make sure that your expectations are going in the same direction.

Lying about your plans can seriously affect the way your marriage evolves. So, why would you waste your time with a person who doesn’t have the same purpose in life? The best is to make things clear from the beginning and be honest about your expectations.

7. False identity

Have you ever dated someone who attempted to be someone else? Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there trying to seem better or cooler, but lying about your identity shouldn’t be an option.

Not being honest about yourself says more about your insecurities and is highly detrimental to the health of any relationship. How can you get your partner to trust you as long as you are not true to yourself?

Speak to a specialist and seek professional help if you feel that you can’t accept your past and your mistakes. Working on yourself and solving the traumas you’ve been suffering from will help you establish healthy relationships in the future.
