The Ho’oponopono Prayer: A Simple Hawaiian Practice for Forgiveness and Healing

September 1, 2025 · Spirituality

Frequently Asked Questions About the Ho’oponopono Prayer

As you begin to explore this practice, questions will naturally arise. Here are answers to some common inquiries, offered to help bring clarity to your journey.

Do I have to say the phrases out loud or directly to the other person?

No, this is not necessary and sometimes not even advisable. The modern Ho’oponopono prayer is primarily an internal practice. It is about “cleaning” the energy and memories within you. The work is between you and the divine, not between you and the other person.

While this inner shift can sometimes soften your heart and lead to more peaceful interactions with others, the main goal is your own freedom and peace. Forcing a conversation before you are ready, or when it is unsafe, is not the purpose of this prayer.

What if I don’t feel sorry? What if I truly believe the other person was 100% wrong?

This is a very common and understandable stumbling block. Remember, the “I’m sorry” is not an admission of fault for the external event. You are not apologizing for what they did.

You are saying “I’m sorry” for the painful data, the resentment, or the anger that you are now carrying inside your own mind and body as a result of the event. You are taking responsibility for your inner reaction, not their outer action.

You can be sorry that you have to carry this painful energy without ever excusing their behavior.

How long does it take for Ho’oponopono to “work”?

The practice of Ho’oponopono is more of a continuous path than a destination with a set timeline. Some people report feeling a sense of calm, lightness, or relief almost immediately after saying the phrases. For deeper, older wounds, it may be a gentle, ongoing process that unfolds over weeks, months, or even years.

The goal is not to force a specific outcome but to engage in the loving process of “cleaning.” Trust that each time you repeat the phrases with sincere intention, you are planting a seed of healing, even if you don’t see it sprout right away.

Do I need to believe in a specific God or religion for this to be effective?

No, the practice is incredibly adaptable. You can direct the prayer to whatever higher power you believe in, whether you call it God, Spirit, the Universe, the Divine, or Source.

If you are not religious, you can direct the phrases to your own higher self, to the wisdom of your own heart, or simply to the universal energy of love and forgiveness. The intention behind the words is more important than the specific deity you address.

Can I use the prayer for things other than forgiving people?

Absolutely. In the modern interpretation taught by Dr. Hew Len, the prayer can be used to “clean” any “data” or limiting programming within you that causes distress. You can use it when you feel anxious about finances, when you are experiencing physical pain, or when you are struggling with self-doubt or creative blocks.

By applying the four phrases, you are asking for the inner energy connected to that problem to be cleared, opening the way for peace, inspiration, and healing to flow.
