This is true for nearly everyone in this day and age, not just mothers-in-law. Most people are surprised when unexpected visitors arrive at their homes, and it may be quite upsetting. However, when a mother-in-law gets involved, it becomes a problem because the daughter-in-law starts to feel uneasy in her own house, often as if she is walking on eggshells.

It may seem like a lovely gesture, but some mothers-in-law use this time to clean up the house or rearrange the furniture, something a daughter-in-law doesn’t want to deal with, much less when they come over unexpectedly. Awkwardness in one’s own house is never a good feeling, but that’s how it often feels when a mother-in-law simply shows up without warning.

This is especially true if their mother-in-law has a knack for finding flaws in almost everything. Naturally, it only raises dysfunction and “agony” to completely new heights.
