What IS self-therapy?
Self-therapy isn’t a formal type of psychotherapy. It might be better thought of as using self-help strategies for a person’s mental well-being.
Being your own therapist is all about taking control to develop and implement a set of skills necessary to manage mental health challenges better.
In other words, self-therapy is an informal psychological intervention delivered by you FROM you without the input of a trained psychologist.
Even though the term “self-therapy” is used broadly, it could be misleading for some. Formal mental health therapy is based on the professional-client relationship.
This relationship is essential to the therapeutic process, and it’s, of course, lacking in self-directed interventions.
In this sense, self-therapy is definitely NOT equal to or a replacement for traditional therapy. Nevertheless, it could be a great addition to professional support.
