#6 Even if They Aren’t Specialists in Your Problem, They’ll Still Accept You as a Client
There are numerous subspecialties for therapists. One therapist might, for instance, work with patients who suffer from substance use disorders. Another therapist may have experience treating patients who have suffered serious trauma in the past.
If therapists portray themselves as experts in a field but lack experience, they are probably acting outside of their training. This raises an alarm.
It is your right to inquire about the education and experience your psychotherapist has and to be aware of these things. They should let you know if they have any expertise in the issues you are presenting to therapy.
A competent therapist would make the right recommendations for a more specialized therapist.
